Obituary of William F. Tuxbury

IN THE CARE OF

Nickerson Funeral Home

William (Bill) Tuxbury, Jr., 83, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away at home in Chatham, MA, on January 12, 2026. Bill was born in Amesbury, MA, on March 2, 1942, to Celia Tuxbury and William Tuxbury, Sr. and grew up in Newburyport, MA, with his younger brother, Richard Tuxbury. He was a proud alum of Governor Dummer Academy in Byfield, MA, graduating in 1960. Bill attended Williams College, graduating in 1964 with a B.A. in physics and a minor in mathematics.

After graduation, Bill moved to Baltimore, MD, and worked at Westinghouse Electronic Corporation. While living in Baltimore, he met his wife of 56 years, the former Edyth Williams, at Mr. Smith's in Georgetown, D.C. Bill and Edyth then made their way to Cambridge, MA, where Bill attended Harvard Business School, graduating in 1971.

Following graduation, Bill worked as an executive at several companies, including Brand-Rex Company and Times Fiber Communications. His work took him and his family to several different homes, including Lakeland, FL, and Washington Crossing, PA, before he and Edyth settled in Cheshire, CT to raise their three children.

Bill was an active member of the Cheshire community. He was a volunteer youth sports coach, a devoted member of St. Thomas Becket Catholic Church, and enjoyed playing in adult recreational basketball leagues. He was an avid recreational fisherman and enjoyed taking his kids fishing on their local neighborhood pond and the jetties of Cape Cod. But most of all, Bill loved to watch his children's activities and high school sports. Bill never missed his kids' track and field races or other school events.

While living in Cheshire, Bill and his family regularly traveled to Cape Cod for vacation. Eventually, Bill and his wife Edyth decided to make the Cape their full-time home, and moved to Chatham, where Bill enjoyed over 25 happy years. On the Cape, Bill was able to continue his love of outdoor activities, spending many years harvesting fresh clams on the Monomoy flats, surfcasting off the beach, and tending to his vegetable garden. He was an active member of the Chatham community. Bill volunteered for SCORE, served as a docent at the Mayo House in Chatham and the Chatham Railroad Museum.

Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and was immensely proud of his family. His most cherished memories were times spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Bill also was an ardent Boston sports fan, never missing a Patriots game, and loved watching any Boston sports with his family and his beloved pets.

Bill is survived by his wife, Edyth Tuxbury; his three children, Kathryn, James, his wife Lorrin, and Susan, her husband Matt Formica; six beloved grandchildren (Charlotte, Emma, Madeline, Caroline, Sam, and Max); his brother, Richard and his wife Joanne; several nieces and nephews; and his dear cat Gallagher.

The family would like to thank Andrea, Mary Anne, Deb and all the VNA staff, for their dedication and immense support.

A funeral mass will be held at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church at 57 Highland Avenue, Chatham, MA at 10:00 am on Saturday, January 31st. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Massachusetts Audubon Society (www.massaudubon.org) or in Bill’s memory visit and enjoy the Chatham Railroad Museum, 153 Depot Road, Chatham, MA, this summer when it opens for the season on June 9, 2026.
