John carried within him a marvelously creative combination of curiosity and delight.  I never took a course with him, so I’m not sure how this operated in class, but the summer we spent together for Williams in Hong Kong his curiosity/delight accomplished a lot.  Never was this more true than in his work with our students.  For him, from the start, each was an individual.  He spoke of them often, but never unkindly – he’d note a trait, a keenness, a dignity.  His smile was sufficient comment on how he felt about what he was discovering as he grew to know  Mr. Chen, Mr. Lin, Miss Lee.  And there was his meticulous care for the details of our lessons.  The curriculum we’d been given wasn’t just good.  It was fun.  In class and outside of it, he wondered at what he was seeing.  What he then offered was life-giving, both to students and to those of us teaching with him.  Our paths crossed only once after graduation, but I was not at all surprised that he led such a remarkably effective life of public service, working long term with leaders in developing nations, even becoming an honorary Nigerian along the way.
